Mary J. Carruthers hat durch ihre philologischen Forschungen zu mittelalterlichen Gedächtnistheorien ein Forschungsfeld aufgetan, das für Medienwissenschaftler, Neuropsychologen und Informatiker gleichermaßen interessant ist. Ihre Werke helfen nicht nur, mittelalterliche Konzepte von ‚Gedächtnis‘, die weit mehr umfassen als einen bloßen Informationsspeicher, besser zu verstehen, sondern schärfen auf diese Weise auch den Blick auf moderne Vorstellungen vom ‚Gedächtnis‘. Für ihre Arbeiten wurde sie mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u. a. mit der Haskins Medal der Medieval Academy of America für ihre Studie The Craft of Thought: Meditation, Rhetoric, and the Making of Images. 400–1200.
Centuries before mind-maps became fashionable, ancient orators and medieval preachers were concerned with the problem of how to memorize a speech and how to make an audience remember it. Although the solutions that ancient and medieval writers recommend show basic similarities, there are also fundamental differences, which have long been regarded as misunderstandings of the ancient tradition on the part of the medieval writers. The workshop aims at differentiating the various ways of structuring the brain and at discussing why medieval mnemonic practice might have led to a conscious rejection of some of the ancient models.

Empfohlen wird außerdem die Lektüre der Monographien von Frau Professor Carruthers, besonders: The Book of Memory: A Study of Memory in Medieval Culture.
